How to start a local theatre group

The nuts and bolts of how, but also, a bit of what.

What is local? Embedded in place

What? A group that is not only professional, but does imply a high level of commitment.

Commitment to what?

Consistent practice, the work - The work of what? Process, the act of making together, the craft of acting, storytelling. The time required.

Why? Fun, fulfilling. Maybe a way to engender more ensemble theatre, which is disappearing with small budgets. Chance to happen outside of London. In conversation, born from, the place.

What’s the offer?

-space

-connection

- Opportunity to engage in theatre, in the practice

- later, potential for wider web of creatives that may not engage at first (i.e. musicians, writing, design, etc)

Ideally without cost. So, require some funding for CONSISTENCY!

Regular meeting. Consistent leadership.

Leadership encompassing admin, holding space, facilitation.

Doesn’t have to be one person, but may require funds to ensure that consistency to feed the passion. Certainly so if that person, or one of those people, is me!

But, also, what can leadership be, should be, in this case? Can it become itself more ensemble based? What about Open Space? Also, see Leadership session report.

How to actually start this? To gather people for this, and START?

Offer a workshop, a session, a series of workshops? Or, a performance at another local event, cabaret, etc?
