Einstein on the Beach

Ensemble is at the heart of Improbable’s work and have been a key part of how we have made operas over the years. This ensemble hold the atmosphere of the show, creating the large scale imagery and creating characters within the ensemble.

We are looking for a group of 14 excellent ensemble players who have a range of movement and performance skills between them. These are non-singing and non-speaking parts.

We are looking for performers who love being part of a team. You will be on stage throughout much of the opera, bringing together the visual imagery of the production. You will be performing set choreographed movement, moving set and prop pieces and working together to create large scale images supporting the storytelling in the show. All members of the ensemble should be:  

• Excited to try out new ideas and stretch their movement practice in new directions.

• Comfortable engaging directly with an audience, welcoming them at the start of the show and potentially interacting with them during the show.

• Experienced in or ability to puppeteer objects and scenic elements, such as large screens and fans, bringing these to life with intention and focus (these elements form part of the visual storytelling and are integrated into ensemble staging throughout the show).

• Confident movers who can perform set choreographed pieces.

• Comfortable learning multiple tracks in a show and flexible to change tracks as needed, as the team will cover each other’s tracks within the ensemble.

• Able to step out of the ensemble and into a character, for example a witness at a trial, a couple of a park bench or Einstein himself.

 Within the ensemble we are looking for specialist skills. Not everyone needs to have these skills, but please let us know if you do.

• Acrobatics and/or parkour – to take place over, within and around a train carriage

• Aerial

• Ballroom dance

• Tap dance

 We’re looking for UK based artists. Depending on your residence status, some applicants must hold a valid work permit or visa enabling them to legally work in the UK for the duration of the engagement.
